GENEVA,
SATUHARAPAN.COM - Indonesian rejected the statements made by the delegation of
Solomon, Vanuatu and a non-governmental organization on Papua on the UN Human
Rights Council session in Geneva, on June 22th, 2016. Statements submitted the
Solomon Islands shows a lack of understanding of the state of current
and development in Indonesia, including in Papua and West Papua.
This
statements was made by the Ambassador of Indonesian to the United Nations
Triyono Wibowo, when using the right of reply to the statements of Solomon
Islands delegation on the same day in the same place.Ambassador of Indonesia said that the statements did not have a good faith and politically motivated which could be interpreted as supporting separatists in the provinces that have been involved in inciting public disorder and the armed terrorist attacks against civilians and security personnel.
"The support clearly violate the intent and purpose of the United Nations Charter and the principles of international law concerning friendly relations among nations and the sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said in a session can also be seen via the United Nations Internet television (click here Item:4 General Debate (Cont'd) - 24th Meeting 32nd Regular Session of Human Rights Council ).
"Let me explain, Indonesia, as a democracy, is committed to promoting and protecting human rights, including by taking the necessary steps to address allegations of human rights abuses in Papua. As one nothing is perfect, we are always open to dialogue about relieve or human rights issues.
But we
reject the politicization of these issues. We deplore the way the Solomon
Islands and Vanuatu have been abusing this Council and the principles of universal
promotion and protection of human rights by supporting the cause of separatism,
"he said.
He added that President Joko Widodo personally instructed the
relevant government agencies to take steps to resolve the issue of human
rights, including those related to Papua, and also take steps to prevent future
incidents.
"In this case, the government is handling a number of cases of alleged human rights violations in Papua. To speed up the process of dealing with such cases, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Luhut Binsar Panjaitan) has formed an integrated team that includes the National Commission on Human Rights,"of Indonesian he said.
He added, Papua and West Papua enjoy broad autonomy, and democracy, as guaranteed by national laws. Provincial and local governments are elected directly and headed and managed by the people of Papua. In addition, it should be noted that the budget per capita in the two provinces are among the highest in Indonesia.
He continued, that the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are still far from perfect in the implementation and protection of their human rights. "They still faces serious human rights problems. Corruption is rampant in all segments of society and government. Trafficking in persons continued. Children continue to faces harsh treatment, and violence against women is a daily routine."
According to him, there will be progress for their populations if the governments of these countries give priority attention to seriously address the shortage of human rights in their respective countries.
Previously, the Diplomat Country Solomon Islands to the United Nations, Barreto Salato, raised the issue of human rights violations in Papua do the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
According to him, the Solomon Islands as the chairman of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and appointed as chairman of the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF), expressed solidarity for fellow Melanesian people of Wes Papua.
"We will encourage the Indonesian Government to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the conflict taking place in Papua through constructive engagement with the representatives of Papua and respecting their rights as human beings," he continued.
He said Solomon welcomed the great attention given by the President Joko Widodo in building Papua. But at the same time, he added, human rights violations against Papua unresolved.
"The Government of Solomon Islands receive regular reports on cases of arbitrary arrests, executions, torture, ill-treatment, restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly, which is done mainly by the Indonesian police," he said.
