The Indonesian Government is Terrorizing Journalists Through Social Medias

YOGYAKARTA, KABARMAPEGAA.com-News related to the recent riots in Papua has affected the safety of the journalists who wrote them. One of them, Febriana Firdaus, Aljazeera journalist, who is also a member of the Jakarta Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), became a victim of violence in the form of harassment on social media and was threatened by text messages.

Aside from being bullied, Febriana was also
get psychological terror or called doxing. Doxing is tracking and dismantling the identity of journalists who write not in accordance with the political aspirations of the perpetrators, then spreading them to social media for negative purposes.

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts @maklambeturah spread Febriana's personal account related to reporting on victims of riots in Papua. The account owner doubts the number of victims written by Febriana because it is different from the government version. While the author has confirmed to the Deiyai Deputy Regent Mr. Hengky Pigai  and the local church leader.

After the account was spread, Febriana received many messages threatening on social medias. One of them is from the owner of the Twitter account @ ilhamAziz31. The message warned that intelligence had overseen Febriana's activities and asked for constructive narratives to be built.

After the terror, Febriana's space was limited. She felt her movements being watched. Her journalistic work was disrupted. She has pocketed a number of news materials related to Papua. However, due to personal safety considerations, Febriana postponed her journalistic report.

AJI Jakarta assessed that the information disseminated by@maklambeturah sought to discredit and trigger intimidation against Febriana Firdaus. We assess what Febriana does through her media is a standard thing that journalists do as mandated by the Journalistic Code of Ethics. Febriana tries to convey information as objectively as possible and publishes it after going through a verification process.

AJI Jakarta reminds all parties that journalists in carrying out their profession are legally protected. In Law Number 40 of 1999 ofn Indonesian concerning the Press, mechanisms for the right of reply, right of correction or complaint to the Press Council have been regulated if there are parties who wish to provide a response or rebuttal to a report that is detrimental to their good name.

The law also mandates the press to help uphold democratic values, encourage the realization of the rule of law and human rights, and respect for diversity.

In reporting on the Papua issue, AJI Jakarta also reminded journalists to remain independent and not take sides with both the Papuan pro-independence and pro-government groups. Journalists must verify all information, both information from the government and information from citizens in Papua.
