Why is it Important to Support Melanesian people of West
Papua Determining their Own Destiny?
There is cheating and fraud history. On December 27th,
1949, when the recognition of the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia by
the Dutch Government, West Papua was a non-self-governing colony, entitled to
self-determination under international law.
The right was recognized by Indonesia in the New York
Agreement which corroborates the fact that Indonesia has no legal sovereignty
over West Papua.
The existence of Indonesia in West Papua is a colonial
administration that can be permanent only if the people of West Papua choose
integration through self-determination with procedures required by
international law.
The only self-determination that was committed was
through the unlawful People's Detention (PEPERA) in 1969 because it represented
only 1022 or 0.2% of the entire population of Papua, which was conditioned to
agree to integration with Indonesia.
There was also racial discrimination experienced by
Papuan students in Manado or Yogyakarta, as recently happened at the Papuan
Student Dormitory in Kamasan one Yogyakarta. Or racial discrimination in the
workplace, both in government institutions and companies.
The racial discrimination has been carried out long
before even PEPERA took place, as Ali Moertopo's statement in 1966. Please to
follow Ali Moertopo statement is bellow:
"Indonesia does not want Papuans, Indonesia only wants the lands and natural resources contained within the island of Papua. If Papuans want to independence, please find another island in the Pacific region for independence. Or the people of Papuans ask the Americans to provide a place on the moon for the Papuan people to occupy there. "
FRI (the People Front of Indonesia for West Papua)
also views genocide slowly, for last 53th years more than 500,000 Papuans have
been killed by Indonesian Security Forces. Papuans are arrested, tortured and
imprisoned. In the period of 2016 more than 4000 West Papua people were
arrested.
In
addition, there was a robbery of natural wealth, as happened in Wasior forest,
massive exploitation of timber (illegal logging) carried out by the military
and some other companies resulted in the eviction of the customary lands of the
community in the area.
